At the moment banknotes in circulation are 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 afghani, so and coins with nominal values of 5, 2 and 1 afghani.

The first Afghani was introduced for circulation in 1925, replacing the Afghan rupee. In 1940 the Afghani was pegged to the United State dollar, and when the Russian army came into the country in 1978, a monopoly of the Afghani was settled.

In 2002 a monetary reform was made and there was Afghani devaluation as a result of the President Karzai` s attempts to get in control the economy of a country continuously suffering from wars.
